Stan Sabuk At Atlas Memorials Has A Special Project In Key West

Each year Stan Sabuk of Atlas Memorials, Key West, adds names to a very special memorial located at Southern Keys Cemetery on Big Coppitt Key.

“The names are sent to a stencil company, Design Mart in Elberton, Georgia,” Stan told Keys Weekly. “A stencil proof via email is sent back via email for approval by Memorial board."

The pre-cut stencil is shipped to Atlas Memorials, and the two-day process begins with a team of three.

Sabuk told Keys Weekly, “First the area for the names is cleaned and made ready for the stencil. Glue is applied to the area and allowed to dry. Then the stencil is applied and the names are weeded revealing the names to be inscribed."

On the second day, the compressor, tent with wind panels and sandblast pot are brought to the work site. The depth of the letters is checked several times during blasting for accuracy before white Litho is added.

The Key West AIDS Memorial is a tribute to the people who have died of AIDS, and have shown a love of the Florida Keys by living, working or visiting there. Each year names are nominated and added to the list of more than 1,000 names already on the memorial.
